Willow Tree, Day

Even as the
garden is planted first by digging, so is it with paintings as this one; shovel by
small shovel of soil, a space is made where shadows may live and commune; each mark
builds upon an earlier foundation of marks. I sometimes sense that I am to reach
into the painting and grasp at the living things which reside there; if my mind
does not dance upon every swirl, upon every jetty of light, upon every pathway where I
have laid grass, or planted rows of trees, then I have failed to bring the painting to
life. For once the painting leaves my possession it becomes as a finely cut jewel,
sliced just so that it will from that moment forward reveal its hidden treasure, and
forever reflect the radiance of a secret universe common to each one of us.
