In old Algiers, on the
West Bank of the Mississippi in New Orleans, gardens are cultivated by the square
foot. Beauty is grasped at arms length, and peace is a colorful wall to an endless
stream of sound, distant and tall. The vapors of a damp river run slowly through the
streets, all laid in checkerboard fashion with an occasional errant paved soul. One
touches the pink sidewalls, and the purple grocer's store, a large eggplant painted in its
midst. Friendships have a way of returning here, to this oasis surrounded by the
